Sant Boi de Llobregat (Barcelona), November 18 – 2K Foundations, the philanthropic branch of 2K that supports and inspires underserved communities by directly investing in local enrichment programs, has announced its latest project in Spain with the Gasol Foundation, an organization led by Pau and Marc Gasol working to reduce childhood obesity rates by promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The renovation of the Muntanyeta courts was created with Spanish urban artist Digo Diego. Diego was a natural fit for the project having worked on many previous public space projects across Spain. His intimate work within landscaping is inspired by Spain’s urban planning models, while the geometry and abstraction Diego uses serve as a direct reflection of Sant Boi de Llobregat.
“It is an honor for me to participate in projects like this with the Gasol Foundation to offer all children places to practice the sport I adore, while contributing to promote healthy habits,” said Pau Gasol, President of the Gasol Foundation. “I am especially excited about the project taking place in Sant Boi, as it is the city where I grew up and started my journey as an athlete, as well as being the headquarters of our foundation.”
“This new sport facility reminds us of the importance of the public-private collaborations on the design of the cities of the future. For us, this court represents the success of the collaboration between entities and is a major boost for our initiatives oriented to promote sports practice and healthy habits in line with our strategies to build a more sustainable and healthier city,” said Lluïsa Moret, Sant Boi’s Mayor. “We are also very happy to keep strengthening our fruitful relationship with Gasol Foundations.”
“The renovation of the Muntanyeta basketball court is an example of how collaboration between private and public entities and the third sector is capable of transforming the environments where children live, grow and play”, said Cristina Ribes, executive director of Gasol Foundation Europe. “We want this court to become a family space where boys and girls, teens and adults can enjoy physical activity.”
The new courts are now available for public use and recently, an opening celebration was held that included a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Lluïsa Moret as well as pick-up basketball games and skills challenges for local children.
Over the last year, 2K Foundations has grown its efforts to support a number of projects, representing communities around the globe and showcasing the program’s expansion to include career and learning initiatives, increased access to sports through golf clinics and tournaments, community enrichment opportunities through music and upgraded studios, and much more. Recent projects include a refurbished and redesigned basketball court at Sojourner Truth Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota with 3x NBA All-Star and 2022 3-point contest champion Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and 2K Foundations’ first ever activation in Asia with court renovations in Tokyo, created alongside the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation. In the coming years, 2K Foundations will continue supporting international projects and investing in local communities by renovating fields in partnership with world-class artists and athletes.
The Gasol Foundation, created in 2013 by NBA Players Pau and Marc Gasol, aims to take measures in preventing childhood obesity both in Spain and the USA. With this purpose, the entity - member of the World Obesity Federation - focuses its activity on the implementation of programs and initiatives to promote healthy habits such as physical activities and sports, adopting a healthy diet, or the sleep and emotional well-being of children and their families. The foundation has become an example for the promotion of healthy habits and the commitment to scientific research in the childhood obesity field.
